Returning to Brisbane: A New Chapter for Motley Content
I first started producing in Brisbane back in 2010, and during the early years I had the opportunity to produce a variety of projects, including music videos, short films, and corporate videos. It was an incredible foundation for my career, allowing me to build the skills and network required to launch my own production company. By 2020, my career took a significant turn towards directing, which opened up new doors and inspired a move to Sydney. So off I went, taking Motley Content with me.
Expanding Horizons in Sydney
In Sydney, I broadened Motley Content’s portfolio and embraced the hybrid role of producer/director. This shift allowed me to produce a diverse range of projects, including:
Contrition, a short film that premiered at Sydney Underground Film Festival
Chrysalis, a creative brand film made in collaboration with Brisbane creatives
TVCs for 3M Scotch-Brite’s Thai and Japanese markets in collaboration with Sydney agency, Dig
A campaign for the Black Dog Institute’s Luminary Program
A corporate video production for MyIntegra, showcasing an NDIS participant’s story, and
A series of 10 short documentaries for Waverley Council about notable Australian figures
These projects not only expanded Motley Content’s production capabilities, but also lead us to make lifelong friends in our Sydney collaborators. But the strong pull of home brought me back to Brisbane in 2024, and Motley Content hit the road once more.
Brisbane’s Evolving Creative Scene
Brisbane had grown significantly in the years I’ve been away. Once considered the ‘small pond’, the city boasts thriving film and television industry. The advertising lanscape has changed too, with agencies old and new embracing new methods of storytelling, particularly when it comes to social media. Returning to such a vibrant environment has been invigorating, and has offering fresh opportunities to reconnect with old friends, and meet new local talent, clients and collaborators.
Brisbane’s Motley Content produces Run Club with the support of Screen Queensland
Screen Queensland supports Brisbane producer
Since returning to Brisbane, a major highlight for Motley Content has been receiving Screen Queensland funding for Run Club. Since the last project I’d produced with the assistance of Screen Queensland was The Great Champ Fernley in 2014, this project represents a full-circle moment.
Developing a digital series set in my hometown with support from a local institution, not only as a producer but also writer/director, has been a sign that I’m right where I need to be. I’m proud to be a Queensland producer with a Brisbane-based production company, and I look forward to being a key player in the Queensland film production industry.
A new start, with new knowledge
Running Motley Content in Sydney provided me with invaluable knowledge about the greater Australian film, television and advertising landscapes. The expertise I gained while navigating Sydney’s highly competitive market across multiple different types of productions, has made me all the more equipped to produce content here in Brisbane. It’s a new start with new knowledge, but one thing that hasn’t changed is our approach, which is a commitment to collaboration, authenticity and producing the highest quality commercials and content.
As an Australian video production company, we focus on delivering impactful work in Brisbane, Sydney and across the nation. And with Brisbane’s growing reputation as the home to some of Australia’s leading production companies, the Motley Content team is excited for what lies ahead for video production in Brisbane.
