Adele wins Best Live Action Short at Sydney Film Festival

In 2016, I had the privilege of producing Adele, a poignant short film that delves into the challenges faced by a 14-year-old African-Australian girl torn between her high school life and the traditional expectations imposed upon her at home. The narrative sheds light on the harrowing issue of child marriage within immigrant communities in Australia, aiming to foster awareness and dialogue around this critical subject.

Brisbane producer and director win Best Live Action Short at Sydney Film Festival

The journey of bringing Adele to life was both challenging and rewarding. Collaborating with a team of established Brisbane filmmakers including cinematographer Jason Hargreaves ACS and executive producer Mairi Cameron, I supported our female director, Mirene, in her stellar effort to authentically portray the protagonist's internal conflict and the cultural tensions she is forced to navigate. Our shared commitment to telling this harrowing story was recognised at festivals in Australia and around the globe, including being a part of Flickerfest’s Official Selection and winning Best Actress at Melbourne’s St Kilda Film Festival. However, when Adele won the Dendy Live Action Short Award at the Sydney Film Festival in 2017, a testament to the film's impact and resonance with audiences.

As a female film producer, producing Adele reinforced my belief in the power of storytelling to challenge our society and advocate for change. This project not only honed my skills as a film producer, but also deepened my commitment to amplifying marginalised voices through cinema. The success of Adele opened doors to further opportunities, allowing me to continue creating content that addresses pressing social issues for women and minorities.

Producing this drama short film will remain a significant highlight of my career as it embodies the intersection of art and activism I so greatly value. Watch Adele on Vimeo, and for more information about the production team you can visit our IMDb page.
